| Cutting Celery (Apium graveolens 'Amsterdam')--We do not grow real celery so this plant makes it easy to add the same celery flavor to soups and stews. The dark green, glossy foliage dries easily and somewhat resembles flat-leaved parsley. Cutting celery has a more pungent flavor than grocery-store celery, and can be substituted for regular celery in most recipes. A few sprigs can replace one large celery stalk. |

Tatsoi - A dark green Asian salad green that has a spoon like shape, a pleasant and sweet aroma flavor like a mild mustard flavor, similar to bok choi. Tatsoi is generally eaten raw, but may be added to soups at the end of the cooking period. When tatsoi is mixed with other greens it enhances the flavor and nutritional value. Should be stored in the fridge in a temperature range between 32-75 F. Tatsoi is very perishable and has a short storage life. From http://www.recipezaar.com/library/getentry.zsp?id=716 |

Kohlrabi – Harvest when the thickened stems or bulb (the
edible part) is 2 to 3 inches in diameter by cutting off the plant just below
the bulb. Stems become woody if left too long before harvest.
http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/hil/hil-8108.html. Kohlrabi belongs to the cabbage family and got its name from a German word meaning "cabbage-turnip". They were popular in Germany during the 16th century and only recently have they been appreciated elsewhere. Both the leaves and swollen underground stem are edible, specially the stem which can be green, white or purple. Its flavor is milder than a turnip's. If young and tender they may be eaten raw, very thinly sliced. Diced or julienne kohlrabi is good in salads, stir-fries, coated in batter and deep fried or steamed, and accompanied with a cheese sauce. If sliced kohlrabi is blanched first it can be frozen for up to 12 months. http://www.localharvest.org/kohlrabi.jsp |

What does determinate or indeterminate tomatoes mean??? Short answer (determinate) they (scientist) determine when the tomatoes come off, what size they are and how tall the plant will be. Get it determinate....determine. Indeterminate (ha) plant has a mind of it's own. This is my own short answer but I really liked about.com's answer.
Definition: Definition:
Indeterminate tomatoes are actually vines that continue growing in length
throughout the growing season. Also referred to as "vining" tomatoes,
indeterminate tomato varieties will also continue to set and ripen fruit until
killed off by frost. |
| What does "food miles" mean? This is the number of miles or distance food is transported (driven) from the time it is picked till it reaches your table. Produce in the U.S. travels, on average, 1300 - 2000 miles from farm to consumer. http://attra.ncat.org/farm_energy/food_miles.html Also check my Buy Local Link. |
